Wiring LED Work Lights the Right Way
Work lights are almost always wired to a dedicated switch rather than tied into the headlight circuit. You want to be able to flip them on independently, especially if they are rear-facing or side-facing lights that would be useless or blinding if they came on with your headlights. What to Look for When Comparing Work Lights
Build quality is the first thing to check. A work light lives in a harsh environment. Look for a housing made from die-cast aluminum, a polycarbonate or tempered glass lens, and a gasket seal that keeps water and dust out. Cheap housings flex, crack, and let moisture in. Check the mounting hardware. Thin stamped steel brackets bend. Thicker cast or machined brackets hold their aim. Can I use LED work lights while driving on public roads?
It depends on how the light is aimed and what your state allows. Rear-facing and side-facing work lights that are off while driving are generally not an issue. Forward-facing work lights used while driving on public roads are regulated differently in every state, and many are legal only for off-road use. What is the difference between a work light and a scene light?
Work lights are typically compact, single-unit flood lights designed to cover a specific zone around the rig. How many work lights do I actually need?
For most rigs, two is the practical answer. One rear-facing light covers the hitch and recovery area behind the truck. A second light on the opposite side of the rig, or aimed at a specific work zone, fills in the gaps. UTVs often run two to four work lights as part of a full build. Farms and work trucks sometimes run more. Start with two, aim them well, and add more only if you find a specific gap in coverage after using them in the field.
Do work lights need a relay?
Yes. Any LED light drawing meaningful current should be wired through a relay. The relay lets a low-current switch signal control a high-current circuit, which protects your switch and your wiring. Skipping the relay and wiring the light directly through a small switch is a common shortcut that leads to burned switch contacts or melted wiring over time. What IP rating should I look for in a work light?
IP67 is the minimum worth considering for any light mounted on an off-road rig. IP67 means the light can handle temporary submersion up to one meter. IP68 is rated for deeper or longer submersion.
