How to Choose Rock Lights for Your Truck or Rig

They sit close to the frame, axles, and rocker panels, so they take a beating from rocks, mud, water, and trail debris. A good set keeps you from stepping into a hole in the dark, lets your spotter see exactly where your tires are sitting, and makes a night recovery a whole lot less miserable.
They also pull double duty on show builds and trail rigs that run after dark. A well-placed kit turns a plain undercarriage into something that looks intentional and finished. But function should drive the decision first. If you buy lights just for looks and they fail on the first muddy trail, you wasted the money. Buy lights built for the abuse, and the looks come along for free.
Rock lights are almost always sold in kits of four, six, or eight pods. The number you need depends on the size of your rig and how much ground coverage you want. A short-wheelbase Jeep can get away with four. A long-bed truck or a full-size UTV usually needs six or eight to cover the full length without dark gaps along the sides.
How Many Rock Lights Does Your Rig Actually Need?
The honest answer is: enough to eliminate dark gaps under the full length of the vehicle. Walk around your rig at night with a flashlight held low and notice where shadows fall. Those are the spots a spotter loses sight of your tire placement. That mental picture tells you more than any chart.
For most compact Jeeps and short UTVs, a four-pod kit covers the front corners and rear corners without much overlap. That works fine for basic trail use and looks clean. Step up to a six-pod kit and you can add a pod at each rocker panel midpoint, which fills in the shadow zone along the side skirts and gives a spotter a continuous line of light to read.
Full-size trucks and long-travel rigs almost always benefit from an eight-pod kit. You get front, mid, and rear coverage on both sides, and the light wraps around the undercarriage evenly. White or Color: Which Rock Light Is Right for Your Build?
White rock lights are the practical choice for anyone who uses their rig to work or recover at night. White light shows you the actual ground, the actual color of the mud, and the actual position of the tire on the rock. Your spotter reads the terrain accurately. You step out of the cab and see exactly what you are walking on. For work trucks, farm rigs, and serious trail builds, white is the default.
Color rock lights are popular on show builds, UTV builds, and rigs that spend time at events or on the street between trails. RGB and multi-color pods let you dial in any color you want, match your rig's theme, or sync the lights to music through a Bluetooth controller. They look sharp. Just understand that a saturated color like red or blue does not illuminate the ground the way white does. You are trading some function for style, and that is a fair trade if the rig is not a pure work machine.
Some builders split the difference by running white pods at the front and rear for functional coverage and color pods along the rockers for show effect. That approach works well on builds that go to events but also hit the trail. Whatever you choose, make sure the color temperature or color output is consistent across the whole kit so the lighting looks intentional rather than mismatched.

Waterproofing and Durability: What to Look for Before You Buy
Rock lights live in the worst spot on the vehicle. They sit inches from the ground, get blasted with water, packed with mud, and hit by rocks kicked up by the tires. IP rating is the spec that tells you how well a light is sealed against water and dust. For rock lights, you want a rating of IP67 or higher. IP67 means the light can handle temporary submersion in water. IP68 means it is rated for deeper or longer submersion. Anything below IP67 is going to fail on a trail that crosses water or runs through deep mud.
Housing material matters too. Die-cast aluminum housings handle heat well and resist impact better than thin plastic shells. Look for lights with a polycarbonate lens rather than acrylic. Polycarbonate flexes slightly under impact instead of cracking, which matters when a rock clips the pod at speed. The mounting hardware should be stainless or coated steel so it does not rust out after a season of wet trail use.
Wiring connectors are a common failure point that buyers overlook. Cheap kits use bare wire splices or thin connectors that corrode fast in wet conditions. Quality kits include weatherproof connectors, often with a locking collar or a rubber seal at the connection point. If you are buying individual pods rather than a kit, check that the pigtail length is long enough to reach your wiring run without a splice right at the light.
Mounting Locations and How to Place Rock Lights Correctly
The most common mounting spots are the frame rails, lower control arm brackets, rocker panel skids, and differential housings. Frame rail mounts give you the most protection because the frame sits above the light and takes the hit before the pod does. Rocker panel mounts look great and throw light out to the side, but they are more exposed on tight trails with close rock walls.
Aim matters more than most buyers expect. Rock lights are not just pointed straight down. Angling the pods slightly outward throws light beyond the tire contact patch and lets a spotter see the approach to the tire, not just the tire itself. Angling a front pod slightly forward lights the terrain ahead of the front axle. Small adjustments at install time make a real difference in how useful the lights are on the trail.
Avoid mounting pods directly behind the tires without a shield or skid to protect them. Roost from the tires is constant and will chip or crack an unprotected lens over time. If your frame or skid does not offer a natural shadow for the pod, look for lights that include a small mounting bracket with a built-in lip or guard. Some builders add a short piece of angle iron as a rock guard behind each pod, which adds maybe ten minutes to the install and saves the lights from early failure.

Wiring Your Rock Lights the Right Way
Rock light kits almost always include a wiring harness, but the quality varies. A good harness has a relay, an inline fuse, weatherproof connectors at each pod, and enough wire length to reach from the battery to the farthest pod without pulling the wire tight. Tight wire runs chafe against frame edges and fail. Always leave a little slack and use loom or split conduit anywhere the wire runs near a sharp edge or a heat source.
Most rock light kits run all pods off a single circuit through a relay. That is fine for most builds. If you want to control front and rear pods separately, or run color zones independently, you need a harness that splits into two or more circuits, or you wire separate runs from a switch panel. RGB kits usually include a controller box that handles the color changes and may connect to a Bluetooth app. Make sure the controller is mounted somewhere it will not get submerged, even if the pods themselves are rated for submersion.
Fusing is not optional. Every circuit needs a fuse sized close to the wire gauge, not the maximum the lights can pull. An oversized fuse protects the light but not the wire, and a wiring fire under a rig is a bad day. Use Case Breakdown: Trail Rig, Show Build, Farm and Work, UTV
Trail rig builders should prioritize IP68 waterproofing, aluminum housings, and white light output. A six or eight pod kit mounted on the frame rails with the wiring run inside the frame is the most durable setup. Skip the RGB on a rig that spends real time in the mud. The color controller adds a failure point and the color output does not help you on the trail.
Show builds have more flexibility. RGB pods, color-matched wiring loom, and Bluetooth control are all fair game. Mounting on the rocker skids or lower body panels looks cleaner for shows even if it is slightly less protected. Just know that a show rig that also hits the trail needs the same IP rating and housing quality as a pure trail rig.
Farm and work trucks need simple, reliable, and bright. White pods, a basic relay harness, and a rocker switch in the cab. No app, no controller, no complexity. The lights need to work every time, in any weather, without fussing with a phone. UTVs and side-by-sides are a middle ground. They run tight trails and also go to events. A six-pod white kit handles the trail work, and if you want to add color pods for events, running a second small kit on a separate circuit keeps the functional lights independent from the show lights.

Can I use rock lights on the street or are they off-road only?
It depends on your state. Many states restrict or prohibit colored underglow lighting on public roads, and some restrict additional white lighting aimed at the ground. White rock lights used purely for ground illumination in a parking lot or driveway are generally low risk, but colored rock lights running while driving on a public road can draw a citation in many states. Check your state's vehicle lighting laws before running them on the street. When in doubt, use a switch to turn them off before you hit pavement.
How do I keep rock lights from getting ripped off on the trail?
Mount them on the frame rail or behind a skid plate so the frame or skid takes the hit first. Avoid mounting pods on the lowest exposed point of the rocker or body. Use stainless hardware and apply a small amount of thread locker so vibration does not back the bolts out over time. Some builders weld or bolt a short piece of angle iron just behind each pod as a rock guard. Keep wire runs inside the frame where possible and use split loom or corrugated conduit on any section of wire that runs outside the frame.
Do rock light kits include everything I need to install them?
Most kits include the pods, a wiring harness with a relay and inline fuse, mounting hardware, and a switch or switch lead. What they usually do not include is a switch panel, additional wire loom for long runs, or extra extension cables if your frame is unusually long. Check the harness length against your rig before you order. If you have a long-bed truck or a stretched build, you may need extension cables to reach the rear pods without splicing. What is the difference between a rock light kit and buying individual pods?
A kit bundles matched pods with a harness designed to run them together. Everything is sized and tested to work as a system, which saves time and reduces wiring mistakes. Individual pods give you flexibility to mix quantities, choose specific mounting styles, or replace a single failed pod without buying a whole kit. For most buyers, a kit is the better starting point. If you are building a custom install with unusual pod counts or mounting positions, individual pods let you spec exactly what you need.
How long do rock lights typically last?
A quality set of rock lights with a solid IP rating and aluminum housing should last several seasons of regular trail use if they are mounted with protection from direct rock strikes and the wiring is done correctly. The most common failure points are cracked lenses from direct impacts, corroded connectors from poor waterproofing at the splice points, and chafed wires from running wire tight against frame edges without loom. Lights that fail early almost always trace back to one of those three causes, not the LED itself.
