Whip lights are flexible LED-lit poles that mount to the rear corners, bed, or roll cage of a side-by-side, UTV, or dune buggy. If you just want to be seen and do not care about changing colors on the fly, a solid-color whip gets the job done without any extra wiring or controller hassle.

RGB whips use multiple LEDs that can produce a wide spectrum of colors and patterns. Most connect to a Bluetooth controller or a dedicated switch so you can change colors, set chase patterns, or sync multiple whips together. These are popular on show builds, group night rides where everyone picks a color, and any rig where the look matters as much as the function.

One thing to keep in mind with RGB whips: you need a controller to get the full effect. Some whips come bundled with a controller, others do not. Factor that into your budget. If you already run a Bluetooth controller for rock lights or wheel lights, check whether it is compatible before buying a separate one.

How Do Whip Lights Mount and What Should You Know About the Base?

The mount is where a lot of buyers get tripped up. Most whips use a threaded or clamp-style base that attaches to a flag pole receiver, a roll cage tube, or a dedicated whip mount bracket. Make sure the base diameter and thread pattern on the whip matches what you have on your machine, or that you are buying a compatible mount at the same time.

Quick-release bases are worth the extra few dollars if you ride in varied terrain. You can pop the whip off in seconds before entering tight woods and reinstall it when you hit open ground. Some bases also allow you to angle the whip slightly, which helps keep it from whipping forward and hitting the cage on hard acceleration.

Tube clamp mounts are common for riders who do not have a factory flag pole receiver. They grip the roll cage and give you a solid platform. Just make sure the clamp is rated for the tube diameter on your specific machine. A loose mount will let the whip bounce and eventually fatigue the wiring at the base, which is the most common failure point on any whip light.

How Do You Wire a Whip Light on a Side-by-Side?

Most whip lights run on 12V DC power, the same as everything else on your UTV. The wiring is straightforward: a positive lead to a switched power source and a negative to chassis ground. If you are running a single-color whip with no controller, you can wire it directly to a rocker switch and be done in under an hour.

RGB whips need a controller in the circuit between the power source and the whip. The controller handles the color and pattern signals. Some controllers are inline boxes with a handheld remote, others connect via Bluetooth to a phone app. Run the power leads through a fuse to protect the circuit. A blown fuse is a lot cheaper than a burned harness.

IP ratings give you a general idea of water and dust resistance, though real-world durability also comes down to build quality and how the wiring is sealed.

Think about how many whips you want to run. A lot of riders start with one and add a second later for a symmetrical look. If you think you will run two, buy a matching pair from the start so the colors and brightness are consistent. Mixing whips from different production runs can result in slight color differences that are noticeable side by side.

Finally, consider what else you are running on the rig. If you already have rock lights or wheel lights, coordinating them with your whips through a single controller gives you a cleaner setup and one less thing to manage on the trail.
