Flush mount LED lights sit recessed into a panel so the lens face sits even with, or just slightly proud of, the surrounding surface. That low profile is the whole point. You get a clean look with no brackets sticking out, no hardware catching mud, and no light housing vibrating loose on rough trail. The tradeoff is that you are cutting a hole in your truck, so the install takes more planning than bolting a pod to a bracket.
The most common locations on a truck are the hood (pointed forward or downward toward the trail), the front bumper face, and the bumper corners. Each spot has different panel thickness, different backing material, and different wiring paths, so the process varies a bit by location. Tools and Parts You Need Before You Start
Getting everything on the bench before you start saves you from stopping mid-cut with a half-open hole in your hood. The list is not long, but skipping any of these makes the job harder or leaves you with a sloppy result.
For the cut itself you need a hole saw or step bit sized to your specific light housing, a center punch, a drill, and a metal file or deburring tool to clean the edge. A tape measure, masking tape, and a marker let you lay out the position accurately before any metal is removed. Have a can of touch-up paint or a rust-inhibiting primer pen on hand to seal the bare metal edge right after cutting.
On the wiring side, you need the flush mount lights themselves, a relay harness sized for the number of lights you are running, ring terminals or a fuse tap to connect to the battery, heat shrink connectors, wire strippers, and a crimping tool. Work slowly through each step. The cut is permanent, so double-check your layout before the drill touches metal. Everything after the cut is straightforward.
The wiring steps assume you are using a relay harness, which is the right way to do this. Running the lights directly through a cab switch without a relay puts unnecessary load on your switch wiring and can cause problems over time. Once the lights are mounted and wired, do a quick function test before you button up any panels or route the final loom. It is much easier to fix a bad connection now than after everything is tucked away. Check that the lights come on clean, that there is no flicker, and that the housing sits flush without any gap on one side.
Hood vs Bumper: What Changes Between the Two Locations
Hood installs usually mean thinner sheetmetal with a hollow cavity behind it. That cavity gives you room to work, but it also means the light housing needs to be secured so it cannot rattle or pull through over time. Most flush mount housings use a threaded collar and nut that clamp the panel between the housing flange and the nut from behind. On a hood, make sure the nut is accessible after the light is seated, because you may need to retighten it after the first few trail runs.
Bumper installs often go into thicker steel or aluminum, sometimes with a solid cross-section rather than a hollow cavity. That means you may need a longer housing or a different mounting collar. Measure the panel thickness before you order lights. Bumper corners are popular because the light can throw a wide flood beam out to the side for rock crawling or tight trail work, and the bumper steel is usually stiff enough that vibration is less of a concern than on a hood.

Finishing the Install Clean: Wire Routing and Loom
A clean wire route is what separates a professional-looking install from one that looks like it was done in a parking lot. After your lights are tested and working, plan the full path from the light housing back to the relay harness and then to the battery. Avoid routing wires near exhaust components, sharp metal edges, or anywhere they can rub against a moving part. Use grommets anywhere a wire passes through a firewall or body panel hole.
Corrugated loom or split loom protects the wire bundle from abrasion and heat. Zip tie the loom to existing factory wire runs where you can, keeping your new wiring parallel to what is already there. Leave a small service loop near each light so you can unplug and remove the light later without pulling the whole loom tight. A little slack at the connection point saves a lot of frustration down the road.
Label your connections if you are running multiple lights off one harness. A small piece of tape with a marker note at each connector takes thirty seconds and saves real time if you ever need to troubleshoot. Tuck the relay somewhere protected, like behind a bumper bracket or under the hood near the battery, and make sure it is not sitting in a water trap.
Know the Rules: Off-Road Use and Street Legality
Flush mount lights installed in a hood or bumper are often aimed forward in a way that puts them in the same sight line as oncoming traffic. Many of the brightest off-road LED options are not legal for street use, and lighting laws vary by state. Some states prohibit forward-facing auxiliary lights above a certain brightness or beam pattern on public roads. Check your local regulations before you drive on the street with these lights on.
A common and practical solution is to wire the lights through a switch that is easy to reach but not tied to your headlight circuit, so you remember to turn them off before you hit pavement. Some builders add a cover or lens cap for street driving. That is your call, but do not assume a light is street-legal just because it came with a wiring harness. When in doubt, treat them as off-road-only lights.
Step by step

Plan and mark your mounting location
Use masking tape to mark the exact center point of each light on the hood or bumper. Measure twice from reference points on both sides to confirm the position is centered and level. Mark the center with a punch before drilling.

Drill a pilot hole, then cut the full opening
Drill a small pilot hole at the center mark first. Then use a hole saw or step bit sized to your light housing to cut the full opening. Go slow and keep the drill straight. Let the bit do the work without forcing it.

Deburr and prime the cut edge
File or deburr the cut edge until it is smooth with no sharp points. Wipe away metal dust, then apply touch-up paint or a rust-inhibiting primer pen to the bare metal edge. Let it dry before proceeding.

Seat the light housing and secure the backing nut
Insert the light housing from the front of the panel. From behind, thread on the backing collar or nut and tighten until the housing flange sits flush and firm against the panel surface. Do not overtighten. Check that the housing sits flat with no gap on any side.

Connect the light leads to the relay harness
Plug the light's pigtail into the relay harness output lead. If you are running multiple lights, use a splitter cable to connect both lights to the same harness output. Keep connections clean and use heat shrink over any exposed terminals.

Route and protect the wiring
Run the harness wire from the light back toward the battery, following existing factory wire routes where possible. Wrap the bundle in corrugated loom and zip tie it at regular intervals. Use a grommet anywhere the wire passes through a body panel or firewall hole.

Connect the harness to the battery and mount the relay
Connect the relay harness power lead to the positive battery terminal using the included ring terminal, and the ground lead to a clean chassis ground point. Mount the relay in a protected location away from heat and water. Connect the switch lead to your chosen switch inside the cab.

Turn on the lights and check for full brightness and no flicker. Tug gently on each connection to confirm it is seated. Inspect the housing from the front to confirm it sits flush. Tighten any zip ties you left loose during routing and trim the tails.
Quick answers
Can I install flush mount lights in a factory plastic bumper?
Yes, but plastic requires a different approach than steel. Use a hole saw designed for plastic or a sharp step bit and go slow to avoid cracking. The housing flange and backing nut still work the same way, but you may want to add a small backing plate behind the plastic to spread the clamping load and prevent the housing from pulling through over time. Thick plastic bumper covers can actually be easier to work with than steel because there is no bare metal edge to prime.
Do I need a relay harness for just two flush mount lights?
Yes, and it is worth doing even for a small two-light setup. A relay harness keeps the full electrical load off your switch and cab wiring, routes power directly from the battery with its own fuse, and protects the lights from voltage drop. Two lights may not seem like much, but skipping the relay puts wear on your switch over time and can cause dimming if your cab wiring has any resistance built up. It is cheap insurance.
My flush mount light has a small gap on one side after install. How do I fix it?
A gap usually means the hole is slightly off-center or the panel has a curve that the housing flange is not sitting flat against. First, loosen the backing nut and see if the housing can shift to close the gap. If the hole is slightly oversized, a thin bead of black silicone around the flange before you tighten down will seal the gap and hold the housing in position. If the panel curve is the issue, some builders use a thin rubber gasket behind the flange to conform to the surface. Do not just crank the nut tighter, that can crack the housing flange.
What beam pattern should I use for hood-mounted flush mount lights?
It depends on what you want them to do. Hood-mounted lights aimed forward work well with a spot or combo beam for distance. Lights aimed downward toward the trail in front of the bumper are better with a wide flood pattern so you see the rocks and ruts close in.
