Size, Wattage, and Output: What the Numbers Mean in Practice

Work lights come in a wide range of sizes, from compact square pods that fit in a palm to larger rectangular bars designed to mount across a tailgate or roof rack. Bigger is not always better. A pair of mid-size square work lights mounted at the corners of a tailgate will often outperform one large bar mounted in the center because you get better angle coverage and less shadowing.

Wattage tells you how much power the light draws. Output, measured in lumens, tells you how much light actually comes out. These two numbers are related but not the same. A well-designed LED chip converts power to light efficiently. A poorly designed one wastes more of it as heat. IP Ratings, Housing, and Why Durability Matters More for Work Lights

Work lights take more abuse than trail lights. They get sprayed with mud, hit with pressure washers, soaked in rain, and sometimes submerged when you cross water on a farm or trail. The IP rating on a light tells you how well the housing resists dust and water. For off-road and outdoor work use, you want at least an IP67 rating, which means the light can handle temporary submersion. IP68 is better if the light will regularly see standing water or deep crossings.

Housing material matters too. Die-cast aluminum housings dissipate heat better than plastic shells, which extends LED life significantly. LEDs do not burn out the way old halogen bulbs did, but heat is still their main enemy. A light that runs hot because of a cheap housing will degrade faster and lose output over time. Look for lights with solid aluminum construction and a good lens seal.

Lens material is often overlooked. Polycarbonate lenses resist impact better than glass but can yellow or haze over time if the coating is poor. Tempered glass lenses stay clearer longer but can crack from a direct hit. For farm and heavy work use where rocks and debris are common, a tough polycarbonate lens with a good UV coating is usually the smarter choice.

Where to Mount Work Lights on Different Rigs

On trucks, the most common work light positions are the rear bumper corners, the tailgate area, and the bed sides. Rear-mounted work lights are especially useful for towing, backing up to equipment, and loading in the dark. Wiring Work Lights the Right Way

Work lights draw real current, especially if you are running multiple lights or higher-wattage units. Running them directly off a switch without a relay is a common mistake that leads to melted wiring, blown fuses, and failed switches. A relay-based wiring harness routes the heavy current through the relay and fuse rather than through your switch, which protects both the switch and the factory wiring.

A quality power harness designed for auxiliary lighting will include the relay, an inline fuse, a switch lead, and the correct gauge wire for the current load. For work lights that you only use occasionally, a simple rocker switch on the dash or a panel-mounted switch works well. Work Lights vs Scene Lights: Know the Difference Before You Buy

Work lights and scene lights are close relatives but they are not the same thing. Work lights are typically aimed in a specific direction and mounted to illuminate a task area. Scene lights are designed to flood a wide area around the vehicle with soft, even light, often used for camp setups, job sites, or anywhere you need ambient lighting rather than a directed beam.

If your main use case is recovery, towing, or operating equipment, work lights are the right choice. If you spend a lot of time at camp or on job sites where you want the whole area lit up without harsh directional glare, scene lights are worth a look. You should use a relay harness for any work light that draws more than a few amps. A relay harness routes the main current through the relay and fuse, so your switch only carries the small signal current needed to trigger the relay. It is a simple addition that protects your electrical system and makes the installation more reliable long-term.

What IP rating should I look for in a work light for off-road and farm use?

IP67 is the minimum you should consider for off-road and farm applications. IP67 means the light is dust-tight and can handle temporary submersion in water up to about one meter.
