What to Look for in a Rock Light Pod
Waterproofing is the first thing to check. Rock lights live in the worst real estate on your truck, right in the spray zone for mud, water, and road debris. Look for pods with a high IP rating. Housing material matters almost as much as the rating. Die-cast aluminum housings shed heat better than plastic and hold up to rock strikes without cracking. Some pods use a polycarbonate lens over an aluminum body, which is a solid combination. Avoid pods that feel hollow or flex when you squeeze them. They won't last.
Beam pattern is worth thinking about too. Most rock lights use a wide flood or diffused pattern, which is what you want for ground coverage. A tight spot beam on a rock light is mostly useless because you're lighting the area directly below and beside the truck, not something far away. Some pods use a frosted or diffused lens to spread the light even further and reduce harsh hotspots. Color is a personal call, but it affects function. White and cool white give you the best visibility for actually seeing rocks and terrain. Amber is easier on the eyes in dusty or foggy conditions. Where to Mount Rock Lights on a Truck
The most common mounting spots are the wheel well lips, the frame rails, and the rocker panel area. Wheel well mounting puts the light close to the tire and gives you a direct downward angle on the contact patch, which is exactly what you want for trail use. Frame rail mounting gives you a lower, more protected position and works well on lifted trucks where the frame has good clearance from the ground.
Avoid mounting rock lights anywhere they'll take a direct hit from rocks being thrown by your tires. The inside of the wheel well behind the tire is a bad spot for that reason. The front and rear of the wheel well opening, or just outside it on the frame, are better choices. On trucks with plastic rocker cladding, you can sometimes tuck pods behind the lower edge of the cladding for a cleaner look that also protects the housing.
Think about wire routing before you commit to a mounting location. Every pod needs a wire run back to your harness or switch. Mounting locations that are close to existing frame holes or grommets make the install much cleaner. Plan the route before you drill anything. Loose wiring under a trail rig will snag on brush and rocks and eventually pull a connection loose or chafe through the insulation.
