Step-by-Step: How to Mount and Wire LED Work Lights
Follow these steps in order. Skipping ahead, especially on the wiring side, is how you end up with a blown fuse or a switch that does not work. Take your time on the mounting and routing steps and the electrical part goes fast.
The most common mistake people make is running wire without protecting it. Any wire that passes through a hole in sheet metal needs a rubber grommet. Any wire that runs along a frame rail or through an engine bay needs to be inside loom. Bare wire rubbing against metal will eventually chafe through and short out. Use split loom or corrugated loom on every exposed run and secure it with zip ties every six to eight inches.
After everything is wired and before you close anything up, do a quick function test. Turn on the switch and confirm both lights come on. Check that the relay clicks when you flip the switch. Wiring a Trailer: What Is Different
Wiring work lights on a trailer is similar to a truck install but with a few extra considerations. Most trailers do not have a dedicated auxiliary power circuit, so you have two options. You can run a separate power lead from the tow vehicle's battery or auxiliary circuit back to the trailer, or you can wire the lights to a battery box mounted on the trailer itself. A trailer-mounted battery with a small relay and switch gives you the most flexibility and does not depend on the tow vehicle's wiring.
If you are pulling power from the tow vehicle, use a heavy enough wire gauge for the run length and protect the entire run in loom. Switch Options and Keeping the Install Clean
A rocker switch mounted in the cab is the most common way to control work lights on a truck. You can mount it in an empty switch blank, on the dash, or in an overhead console. The relay harness trigger wire runs from the relay to your switch, and the switch gets a constant 12-volt feed and a ground. When you flip the switch, it triggers the relay, and the relay sends full battery power to the lights. This keeps high current out of your cab wiring and makes the switch last much longer.
If you are running multiple sets of lights, a gang switch panel or a dedicated switch box keeps things organized and lets you control each circuit independently. That way you can run just the work lights without turning on trail lights or other accessories at the same time.
