How to Install LED Pod Lights on a Truck
Step-by-step guide to mounting and wiring LED pod lights on a truck, from picking the right spot to flipping the switch for the first time.

A light bar handles the long-range flood down the trail, but LED pod lights fill in the gaps. You can aim them into the ditches, angle them low for rock crawling, or mount a pair rearward for camp setup and recovery work. Because they are small and mount almost anywhere, pods give you flexibility that a single bar never can.
Trucks in particular have a lot of good real estate for pods. Bumper corners, A-pillars, bed rails, roof edges, and behind the grille are all common spots. Each location changes what the light actually does for you, so it pays to think about your use case before you drill a single hole.

Pick Your Mount Location Before You Buy Anything
The mount location drives every other decision, including what beam pattern you need and how long your wiring run will be. Front bumper corners are the most popular spot on trucks because they put light wide and low without blinding oncoming traffic as badly as a roof mount. Roof mounts give you maximum height and throw, but they are more visible on the road and lighting laws vary by state, so check your local rules before you run them lit on public roads.
A-pillar mounts are great for side-trail visibility and keep the pods out of the way of a winch or recovery gear. Bed mounts work well for work lights and scene lights pointed rearward. Think about what you actually need the light to do, then pick the spot that puts the beam where it matters.
Once you settle on a location, measure the wiring run from that spot back to where your relay or switch panel will live. Add a foot or two of slack. That number tells you what length of extension cable or harness you need before you order anything. Tools and Parts You Need Before You Start
Getting everything on the bench before you start saves you from stopping halfway through with a wire dangling out of your bumper. The list is not long, but skipping any of it makes the job harder.
On the electrical side, a relay harness wired to the battery is the right way to power pods on a truck. Running high-draw lights through a factory switch or fuse tap puts stress on circuits that were not designed for the extra load. A proper power harness with an inline fuse protects your truck and gives the lights clean, consistent voltage. Pair that with a rocker switch or switch panel inside the cab so you have easy control.
For the physical mount, most pods come with a bracket, but you may need additional hardware depending on your bumper or mounting surface. Have self-tapping screws, bolts, and a drill with the right bit size on hand. Dielectric grease on every connector keeps moisture out and prevents corrosion, especially important on a truck that sees mud and water.

Work through these steps in order. Rushing the mount before you plan the wiring route is the most common mistake, and it usually means pulling the bracket back off to fish a wire you forgot.
The wiring side is where most people get nervous, but a relay harness makes it straightforward. The harness does the heavy lifting. You connect the battery leads, run a trigger wire to your switch, and plug the pods into the harness outputs. The relay handles switching the full load so your switch only carries a small signal current. After everything is connected, do a quick test before you button up any panels or zip tie the final run. Turn the switch on and confirm both pods light up. Check that the harness fuse is seated and accessible. Then aim the pods before you fully tighten the brackets, because it is much easier to adjust beam angle now than after everything is torqued down.
Wiring It Clean: Harnesses, Switches, and Routing
Clean wiring is not just about looks. A wire that rubs against a sharp edge long enough will chafe through the insulation and cause a short. Use split loom, corrugated loom, or braided sleeving anywhere the wire runs near metal edges, moving parts, or heat sources. Secure the loom with zip ties every several inches so it cannot migrate.
Route wires away from the exhaust, steering shaft, and any suspension components that move. On a truck, the firewall grommet is your friend for getting wires into the cab cleanly. Most trucks have an existing grommet you can push a wire through without drilling. If you do need to drill, seal the hole with a rubber grommet to protect the wire jacket.
Mount your switch somewhere you can reach it without looking down. A switch panel on the dash or A-pillar is common. Aiming Your Pod Lights After the Install
A pod light aimed wrong is almost as bad as no light at all. Bumper corner pods aimed too high wash out the sky instead of the trail. Pods aimed too low only light up the front bumper. The sweet spot for most trail driving is aimed slightly downward and outward so the beam hits the ground about 20 to 40 feet ahead and to the sides.
Do your final aim at night with the truck parked on a flat surface. Loosen the bracket hardware just enough to pivot the pod, adjust the angle, then snug it back down. Check both horizontal and vertical aim. If you have a flood pattern, you have more forgiveness. A spot pattern needs more precise aiming to put the beam where you want it.

Choose and mark your mount location
Decide where on the truck the pods will mount, such as bumper corners, A-pillars, or the roof edge. Hold the bracket against the surface and mark the hole locations with a marker before drilling anything.

Drill and mount the brackets
Drill pilot holes at your marked locations. Bolt or screw the mounting brackets to the truck using the hardware included with your pods. Do not fully tighten yet since you will need to adjust the aim later.

Attach the pods to the brackets
Thread the pods onto the brackets and hand-tighten the pivot hardware. Leave them loose enough to pivot for aiming after the wiring is done.

Plan and route the wiring
Run the pod wires from the mount location toward the engine bay or cab, keeping them away from exhaust, steering, and suspension components. Use an existing firewall grommet to pass wires into the cab. Protect any wire running near metal edges with split loom or corrugated loom.

Connect the relay harness to the battery
Mount the relay harness in the engine bay. Connect the positive lead to the battery positive terminal and the ground lead to a clean bare-metal ground point. Keep the inline fuse close to the battery and accessible.

Connect the pod wires to the harness outputs. Run the harness trigger wire into the cab and connect it to your rocker switch or switch panel. Mount the switch in a convenient location on the dash or A-pillar.

Turn the switch on and confirm both pods illuminate. Check that the fuse is seated and all connectors are fully locked. Fix any issues now before you zip tie and loom the final wiring run.

Quick answers
Do I need a relay harness for pod lights or can I wire them directly to a switch?
You should use a relay harness. Wiring pods directly through a cab switch puts the full current draw through the switch and any factory wiring in that circuit, which can cause overheating or blown fuses over time. A relay harness pulls power straight from the battery through a fused lead and uses the switch only as a low-current trigger. It is safer for your truck and gives the lights cleaner voltage.
Can I run pod lights on the road, or are they off-road use only?
It depends on the light and your state. Many LED pod lights sold for off-road use are not DOT-approved for road use, and some states prohibit forward-facing auxiliary lights above a certain brightness while driving on public roads. Check your state's vehicle lighting laws before running pods on the highway. When in doubt, wire them to a switch you only flip off-road.
How many pods can I run on one harness?
It depends on the harness rating and the draw of your specific pods. Most single-output relay harnesses are rated for a set amperage load. Check the harness spec against the combined draw of the pods you plan to connect. If you are running four or more pods, look for a harness with multiple outputs or run two separate harnesses. Never exceed the harness rating or you risk overheating the wiring.
What beam pattern should I choose for bumper-mounted pods on a truck?
Flood or combo beam patterns work best for bumper corners because you want wide coverage close to the truck rather than a narrow beam shooting far down the road. A spot pattern from a bumper corner mostly just creates glare. Save spot patterns for roof or hood mounts where you want long-range throw down the trail. If you want both, a combo pod gives you a middle ground.
My pods are flickering after install. What should I check first?
Start with the ground connection. A loose or corroded ground is the most common cause of flickering on auxiliary lights. Make sure the ground wire is bolted to bare metal, not paint or powder coat. After that, check the inline fuse and all connectors for a secure fit. If the harness connector to the pod is not fully seated, you can get an intermittent connection that shows up as a flicker.
