For parts, you need the pod lights themselves, a relay wiring harness sized for the number of pods you are running, a switch or switch panel for the cab, and any mounting brackets or hardware your bumper requires. If your bumper has existing holes, measure them before ordering brackets so you get the right bolt pattern. The steps below cover a standard two-pod bumper install. Check the harness rating against the total draw of all lights on that circuit.

Take your time on the wire routing step. A harness that rubs on a sharp edge or sits near a hot exhaust component will fail eventually. Use loom or split conduit anywhere the wire runs near metal edges, and secure it with zip ties every several inches so it cannot shift and chafe over time.

Aiming and testing your pod lights after install

Once everything is wired and the pods are snug in their brackets, do a quick power-on test before you tighten the brackets all the way down. Confirm both pods light up, then aim them with the mounting bolts still slightly loose so you can pivot the head.

For trail use, most drivers aim bumper pods slightly downward and outward, covering the ground from about ten to thirty feet ahead and to each side of the front tires. For a work or recovery setup where you need more reach straight ahead, aim them more level. There is no single right answer. After aiming, torque the bracket bolts to snug and firm without stripping the threads, then give the harness one final inspection. Common mistakes that cause pod light problems down the road

The most common issue we hear about is moisture getting into connectors. Even pods rated for water resistance can develop problems if a connector sits in a low spot where water pools. Route connectors upward when possible, and use dielectric grease on any connection that will live in the bumper area. It takes thirty seconds and prevents most corrosion issues.

The second most common mistake is skipping the relay harness and tapping straight into a factory circuit. Factory wiring is sized for factory loads. Adding a set of pods to an existing circuit can cause voltage drop, blown fuses, or in worse cases damage to the body control module on newer trucks. Choosing the right pod lights and harness for your truck

Pod size matters too. Smaller pods fit tighter bumper cutouts and add less weight and wind resistance. Larger pods generally push more light. Many bumper installs use pods in the three-inch to four-inch range, but check your bumper's mounting tabs or cutouts before you order so you know what will physically fit.

For the harness, match the harness to the number of pods and the total wattage you are running. A harness built for two pods may not be rated for four.     Plan your wire route before mounting anything

    Trace the path your harness will take from the battery to the bumper and into the cab for the switch lead. Identify any sharp edges, heat sources, or moving parts the wire must avoid. Mark the route with tape or chalk so you have a clear plan before drilling or bolting anything.

    Hold each pod bracket against the bumper in the desired location. Check that the pod will have a clear forward view without the bumper lip blocking the beam. Do I need a relay harness for just two small pod lights?

Yes, and it is worth doing even for a small two-pod setup. A relay harness pulls power directly from the battery through its own fuse, which protects your factory wiring and ensures the pods get clean, stable voltage. Tapping into a factory circuit without a relay can cause voltage drop that dims the lights and risks blowing a fuse or overloading a circuit on newer trucks with sensitive electronics.

Can I mount pod lights on a factory plastic bumper?

It depends on the bumper. Some factory plastic bumpers have fog light cutouts or lower grille openings where pods can be mounted with a bracket behind the plastic. Others have no good mounting point and require a bumper replacement or a grille-bar insert. How do I keep water out of the pod light connectors on my bumper?

Use dielectric grease on every connector that lives in the bumper area. Apply a small amount inside the connector before seating it, and make sure the connector is fully clicked or threaded together. Route connectors so they face downward or to the side rather than upward, which prevents water from pooling inside. If your harness connectors are not weatherproof by design, wrap them with self-fusing silicone tape as an added layer of protection.

Can I run bumper pod lights and a light bar on the same switch?

Technically yes, but it is usually better to run them on separate switches.
